Hi,
Which alsaplayer version are you using? The old ones with gtk1 interface have alimitation, but with the last ones with the gtk2 interface, I don't know whatthe limitation is if any. It must be system dependant. I try with very hugeplaylist with thousands of songs and it was working fine.  
So, please try alsaplayer-0.99.80 and if the problem remain, please complain onthe alsaplayer-devel list:  http://www.alsaplayer.org/lists.php3
