That slider is for the mixing of the mic input into the output of the
soundcard. It is not for the level of the sound recorded by the computer.

Getting the microphone to work on the Intel HDA and in particular the
ALC880 seems to be a real problem. I do not know whta the problem is
however, or a solution.
