I tried those options on my main box, which has a pretty much identical
installation as the secondary one but with an SB Audigy soundcard and
obtained a playable wav file. Doing the same thing on the secondary box
results in a wav file but when I try to play it I get no sound. I get the
same result with those files both on SUSE and Windows on the main box, so I
don't know what's going wrong.

I have that module loaded and can point Audacity to use the OSS layer it
doesn't find a useable recording level.

I find the envy24control very confusing, can you tell me how to set that
level ?

I don't want advanced recording I just want to be able to record stuff,
basically BBC radio using either Krecord or Audacity in real time. I can do
that with the SB card and the onboard chip on the other box. I got the
Maudio card to give me the best possible sound output from a pc to my hi fi
system. Which is what it does, so the recording thing is a side issue, but I
did assume it would be a simple matter to enable.

Above comment refers as far as BBC is concerned, I'll now try the monitor-PCM
stuff.

Best
