SPDIF AC3 Passthrough please help before I need the padded wagon!!!

I have three seperate machines outputting to a Sony STR-DB940 AC3 Amp
via SPDIF (two optical one RCA).

I can get all of them to output as standard ALSA devices from Fedora 7
setups and no specific asound.conf or asound.rc files however I
cannot for the life of me get AC3 passthrough to work on any of them
(using either VLC or MPLAYER).

Here's one of the setups....

aplay -l

**** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices ****
card 0: CK804 [NVidia CK804], device 0: Intel ICH [NVidia CK804]
  Subdevices: 0/1
  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
card 0: CK804 [NVidia CK804], device 2: Intel ICH - IEC958 [NVidia
CK804 - IEC958]
  Subdevices: 1/1
  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0

aplay -L

default:CARD=CK804
    NVidia CK804, NVidia CK804
    Default Audio Device
front:CARD=CK804,DEV=0
    NVidia CK804, NVidia CK804
    Front speakers
surround40:CARD=CK804,DEV=0
    NVidia CK804, NVidia CK804
4.0 Surround output to Front and Rear speakers
surround41:CARD=CK804,DEV=0
    NVidia CK804, NVidia CK804
4.1 Surround output to Front, Rear and Subwoofer speakers
surround50:CARD=CK804,DEV=0
    NVidia CK804, NVidia CK804
5.0 Surround output to Front, Center and Rear speakers
surround51:CARD=CK804,DEV=0
    NVidia CK804, NVidia CK804
5.1 Surround output to Front, Center, Rear and Subwoofer speakers
null
Discard all samples (playback) or generate zero samples (capture)

Now I understand that the Surround stuff in aplay -L refers to multi
connected surround and not over spdif however I would expect either a
spdif or iec958 device there shouldn't I?

If I try to output from mplayer on a file I know has AC3 using the command line

mplayer -ac hwac3 ac3test.avi

this is what I get.....but no sound from the amp.

using just mplayer and the filename I get normal (2 channel) sound
from the amp and this...
