HP Pavillion dv2000 headset and microphone jack sound

Hi,
I am trying to get sound working on my HP Pavillion dv2000. I have a
Conexant HD Audio soundcard on my laptop, and I have done reading about
this problem on the internet from posts made by others who have gotten
this working. I mainly have referenced this post about halfway down the
page:

http://www.sundru.net/bblog-stuff/?sectionid=2

To begin with, I had no sound at all on my headset jack and couldn't use
the microphone jack to input sound to the sound card. After I installed
the alsa-driver-1.0.14rc4, I was able to hear sound through the headset
but the laptop speakers don't mute when the headset is plugged into the
jack. The microphone on the headset can be used to input sound through
the microphone jack. The sound that is put in through the microphone
sounds like a Dalek from Dr. Who when it is played back on a Skype test
call. It is very distorted. I then installed the alsa-driver-1.0.15rc1
as it came out shortly after I installed the 1.0.14rc4 driver. Now the
speakers mute when the headset is plugged in, but the microphone sound
isn't any better.
I will need some help to go on from here in order to get the sound
working properly through the microphone and headset jacks. I have
checked in my package manager and all the alsa sound programs installed
are version 1.0.14.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Mark
