I'm not asking "how to mute sth" - I'm asking: "what is the meaning of the
`mute' variable/control" - just look at an example:

numid=36,iface=MIXER,name='PC Speaker Playback Volume'
  ; type=INTEGER,access=rw---R--,values=1,min=0,max=15,step=0
  : values=0
  | dBscale-min=-45.00dB,step=3.00dB,mute=0
numid=20,iface=MIXER,name='Aux2 Capture Volume'
  ; type=INTEGER,access=rw---R--,values=2,min=0,max=100,step=0
  : values=100,100
  | dBscale-min=-40.00dB,step=0.40dB,mute=1

The sound card of yours didn't have any "mutes".
