ali5451 & modem

Hello,

I have trouble getting the modem to work on a notebook, IBM Thinkpad
R40e. It contains a ali 5451 soundchip & ali 5457 modemchip. The sound
part of this notebook works fine, however the modem part does not.

I understand the ALSA driver is supposed to create a second sounddevice
through which a special daemon can use the modem. This second
sounddevice fails to be created however. In dmesg these lines seems related:
[17179601.456000] ALSA
/usr/src/modules/alsa-driver/pci/ac97/ac97_codec.c:1934: AC'97 1 does
not respond - RESET
[17179601.472000] ALSA
/usr/src/modules/alsa-driver/pci/ac97/ac97_codec.c:1943: AC'97 1 access
is not valid [0xffffffff], removing mixer.
[17179601.472000] ALSA
/usr/src/modules/alsa-driver/pci/ali5451/../../alsa-kernel/pci/ali5451/ali5451.c:1976:
ali mixer 1 creating error.

(full dmesg output is here:
http://haar.student.utwente.nl/~julius/dmesg-bob-laptop)

Since the notebook does not contain a serial port for an external modem,
this is very inconvenient. Is there anything I can look into to solve
this problem? I have already tried installing the latest ALSA release,
but it has the same problem.
Can I provide more information to help solving the issue in the driver?

Thanks in advance,
Julius
