Alsa problem on Dell XPS M1710 (or not??)

Hi,

I'm tearing my hair out by the roots here. I don't know if the problem
is Alsa or something else because I *do* have sound. However, I do not
have sound when I try to play an audio CD, although I can rip the CD to
my hard drive and then, I can hear it.

First, I must explain that I have little formal computer training, but
I'm not stupid just need explicit instructions. I've used Alsa for a
number of years (been using Linux since 2000) and have always had
success with the alsa binary driver. Anyway, enough of the intro. The
relevant details are:

I'm running Gentoo Linux
The version of the alsa-driver that is installed is 1.0.14

On boot, the module snd_hda_intel loads and if I do 'modprobe
snd_hda_intel', i don't get an error message.

Output from ' aplay -l' is:

**** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices ****
card 0: Intel [HDA Intel], device 0: STAC92xx Analog [STAC92xx Analog]
  Subdevices: 0/1
  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
(don't know if this is relevant)

I've tried various suggestions that were in reponse to my request for
help on the gentoo-user list and I can't seem to get audio to work when
trying to play an audio CD no matter what I do.

As some final information:

I have Alsa working on my desktop, but it's a different sound card.

On my desktop, kmix shows the following items for output:

Master
Master Mono
Headphone
3D-Control-Center
3D-Control-Depth
PCM
PC Speaker

On the *laptop* (XPS M1710), Kmix shows only the following items for
output:
Master
PCM
Capture Mux

On the laptop, Kmix shows only Mic as Input

If someone can offer some direction here, I would appreciate it.

Regards,

Colleen
