help needed with ALSA and Hammerfal HDSP with Debian kernel 2.6.18

Hi,

I have a recent installation of Debian Etch on a HP dv8263ea laptop.

I'm really lost; I've found lots of conflicting information on the web as to how to get this to work.

Here is what I know (despite all this confusion):

- I have an internal card (intel generic built-in) and the hammerfall cardbus plus multiface interface

- if I run alsaconf as root, the hammerfall appears as the first choice; I select it, and get: "Configuring snd-hdsp. Do you want to modify /etc/modprobe.d/sound? I click 'yes'.  That seems to work because I get: "Now ALSA is ready to use. For adjustment of volumes, use your favourite mixer."

- I can now run hdspmixer; if I launch an app that can send sound to alsa, the levels are displayed in hdspmixer but there is no sound.

- if I try to run qjackcontrol, and try to start jack using HW:0,0 (Hammerfall HDSP), I get the error: "Could not connect to JACK server as client."

I'm now very confused.

Any help very appreciated!
