Perhaps I'm showing my ignorance in the contents of these files. Currently my .asoundrc has: # ALSA library configuration file # Include settings that are under the control of asoundconf(1). # (To disable these settings, comment out this line.) </home/brian/.asoundrc.asoundconf> and my .asoundrc.asoundconf has: ALSA library configuration file managed by asoundconf(1). # # MANUAL CHANGES TO THIS FILE WILL BE OVERWRITTEN! # # Manual changes to the ALSA library configuration should be implemented # by editing the ~/.asoundrc file, not by editing this file. !defaults.pcm.card Live defaults.ctl.card Live defaults.pcm.device 0 defaults.pcm.subdevice -1 defaults.pcm.nonblock 1 defaults.pcm.ipc_key 5678293 defaults.pcm.ipc_gid audio defaults.pcm.ipc_perm 0660 defaults.pcm.dmix_max_periods 0 defaults.rawmidi.card 0 defaults.rawmidi.device 0 defaults.rawmidi.subdevice -1 defaults.hwdep.card 0 defaults.hwdep.device 0 defaults.timer.class 2 defaults.timer.sclass 0 defaults.timer.card 0 defaults.timer.device 0 defaults.timer.subdevice 0 As as example, when I go to another machine this is the type of error I get: $ gvim ALSA lib confmisc.c:670:(snd_func_card_driver) cannot find card 'Live' ALSA lib conf.c:3500:(_snd_config_evaluate) function snd_func_card_driver returned error: No such device ALSA lib confmisc.c:391:(snd_func_concat) error evaluating strings ALSA lib conf.c:3500:(_snd_config_evaluate) function snd_func_concat returned error: No such device ALSA lib confmisc.c:1070:(snd_func_refer) error evaluating name ALSA lib conf.c:3500:(_snd_config_evaluate) function snd_func_refer returned error: No such device ALSA lib conf.c:3968:(snd_config_expand) Evaluate error: No such device ALSA lib pcm.c:2145:(snd_pcm_open_noupdate) Unknown PCM default Which seems to be a result of the "defaults.ctl.card Live" line in my ~/.asoundrc.asoundconf file. But this "defaults.ctl.card" looks like it's a personal preference and that another user might have a different card (on the machine with the 'Live' card in it) as their default when they are logged on so putting that into /etc/asoundrc does not seem appropriate. So how would I restructure the above into /etc/asoundrc so that I don't get the "cannot find card 'Live'" errors on another machine that does not have this "Live" card in it? b. -- My other computer is your Microsoft Windows server.
