Usually this means that your interrupt routing is broken, usually due
to BIOS or ACPI issues.

Check whether the interrupt count for the soundcard in
/proc/interrupts continues to increase once the playback app hangs.
If not then try booting with noacpi and/or noapic and see if the
situation improves.

Usually these problems are outside the scope of ALSA, most often the
bug is in the kernel's ACPI subsystem.  But it's worth a try...
