No, why should it? 

It just may not by possible to set the mixer settings through xine.

Personally I think, this is good: I hate it when other software except
alsamixer tries to change my fine tuned mixer settings directly. 

But I've found this configuration setting in ~/.xine/config:

gui.audio_mixer_method:Software

This setting can also be changed in the "GUI" settings panel, when you
set the "Experience level" to "Expert". Why it's in the GUI panel and
not in the "audio" panel I don't know.
