if aplay lists the device, aplay should be able to play over it: What
do you get, if you do "aplay -Dplughw:1 somefile.wav" on the command
line? If you get sound, it means that ALSA is working correctly and
the problem is somewhere in your Ubuntu/Gnome/GStreamer setup. 

If you don't get sound, then maybe there's some error message in
/var/log/messages or /var/log/syslog?
