K7VT4APro board (VT8233) - volume doesn't change when using "master" volume

I have a K7VT4APro mainboard.

It has VIA Technologies, Inc. VT8233/A/8235/8237 AC97 Audio Controller
(rev 60), as reported by lspci.

The problem is, the "master" volume looks to be dead - the volume of
sound doesn't change at all if I move it up or down, or even disable it
completely.
I can only regulate volume by using PCM.

Is there a way to fix it (so that I could use both the master and PCM to
regulate volume)?

I tried different kernels on different live CDs, but for all of them
master volume was of no use.

The last kernel I tried is 2.6.20.1.
