No problems with snd_hda_intel, but no sound either

Running Ubuntu i386 I got sound working on my Toshiba laptop by downloading
the latest rc1.  I reinstalled and went with amd64 on the same hardware, downloaded and compiled the latest (rc2 and rc2).  Everything compiles perfectly, it installs perfectly, "alsaconf" finds the card and loads the modules.  I check alsamixer, nothing is muted.

Perfect.  Except when I try to play any sounds through amarok, kde or mpg123 I
get 0 output.  I've verified all the volumes are up and nothing is muted.  I checked
the dial on the front of the laptop, nothing.  I put the following in /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base:

options snd-hda-intel position_fix=1 model=ref

and rebooted.  Still nothing.

Help?
