OK, it didn't work. Here are some more details...
I have attached my asound.conf file.
I used this command:

I heard no sound from my speakers and my digital receiver lit up the
COAX light, but didn't detect a signal. My receiver will play fine
hooked up to a stand alone DVD player and on a previous sound card when
it received a signal it didn't like it would show me a "DEC. ERROR"
which leads me to believe that the digital output never actually reaches
the receiver.
Finally, I did a:

I'm not totally opposed to going back to MicroCenter and picking up a
M-Audio Revolution 7.1 card, if you think that will make my ALSA life
easier. I also have a Turtle Beach Riviera card sitting here that I
could use, but that's the one I had so many problems with I decided to
go another route. At least with this card I can get everything except
AC3 to work... that Riviera just gave me a headache here on FC6.
Additional Note... When I do a "iecset audio on" and then do a "aplay
-Ddigital bjorn_lynne-secret_world_\(surround_version\).ac3" I get
static from 2 channels.
