Actually, I found a case when the PCM slider works. If I do something wrong in a terminal window, I hear a beep - also in my headphones. So, the PCM slider controls the beep volume in the headphones. I expected it to control anything which is digital in its nature and is inside my machine, like FLAC or WAV file - in these cases the slider does nothing.
