I did as you suggested for my HP dv2000 with the same chip running suse 10.1. I made one modification to the procedure using checkinstall to build an rpm and installed that rpm - instead of make make install. The new driver works much better and using alsamixer I get many more channels than the original. The problem came when I rebooted, it fails to work and will not cofigure the sound card.
