how to use the snd_aloop loopback driver ?

I am looking for detailed information about how to use the snd_aloop loopback
driver. I guess it just creates a dummy interface that has inputs and outputs
linked together. The only doc I found was the c-source code of the module itself
that lists some options for the module.
My primary question is if it would be possible to have to alsa loopback devices
that are linked together (inputs device 1 -> outputs device 2 and vice versa).
