"aplay -d plughw:1 xxx.wav" gets me sound coming from the onboard 
soundcard on the laptop, but no sound from the Audiophile USB.

The same results when I use "plughw:1,1" (or 1,0 or 0,0).  I also tried 
using hw:1 (and variants).

I appreciate your help.
