Alsamixer volume won't go to zero

I'm running Linus's latest git kernel with alsa 1.0.13.
Alsamixer announces that I have Card: VIA 8235 and
Chip: Realtek ALC650E

My problem, which started maybe two or three months ago,
is that the sound is still audible when alsamixer's
volume control is set to zero. I'd estimate that the
sound level is about 5% of maximum when it should be
zero. (I can make the sound disappear with the 'mute'
function, however.)

I'm sorry but I can't remember which update caused the
problem -- I've been hoping that someone would fix the
bug if I just wait long enough ;o)

Anyone have any idea what might be causing this, or
what diagnostic tricks I could use to find out?

Thanks.
