AD1986A and Analogue Surround - anyone got as working setup?

Trying to get 5.1 output over the rear jacks on a couple of Asus
motherboards.

Asus A8N-VM CSM and
Asus M2NPV-VM

They both use the AD1986A chipset and I have working stereo and spdif
output with Alsa 1.0.11 and a 2.6.15 kernel.

I've been trying to get a working 5.1 out over the rear jacks and I
can't get the output to work. I've tried upgrading to Alsa 1.0.13 but no
luck so far and i'm not sure if there is a component i've failed to upgrade.

Anyone out there got a working configuration, and preferably let me know
the versions of their various sound packages etc.

At the moment I've been trying

> speaker-test -Dsurround51 -c 6
>
> speaker-test 1.0.13
>
> Playback device is surround51
> Stream parameters are 48000Hz, S16_LE, 6 channels

> Rate set to 48000Hz (requested 48000Hz)
> Buffer size range from 22 to 5461
> Period size range from 11 to 2730
> Using max buffer size 5460

aplay -Drear /usr/share/games/tuxracer/sounds/fish_pickup2.wav

phoneline 'cards.pcm.phoneline'
