Poorly supported HDA intel

Hi all;

I'm having some trouble with the sound card on an Asus W5F laptop.
When loading, dmesg says...

hda_codec: Unknown model for ALC861, trying auto-probe from BIOS...

This happens with 2.6.17, 2.6.18, and current hg tip. Now... The problem isn't
that I don't have any sound;
I do have sound... I just don't have proper controls. There's no master nor
PCM, for instance, and the Front or Headphones controls only have the mute
toggle.
Interestingly, the available controls change from version to version, and
sometimes they even change between module reloads (OK, that's understandable,
the board may get confused).

I already tried the available "model=" options. They result
in different controls being available, and some of them give out "scratchier"
sound. Also, FWIW, I use softvol to get a PCM control.

I'm not sure it this card is supposed to have hardware controls, but the fact
that the controls change between versions or reloads is strange... Any hints?

Thanks;
