Thank you Clemens, that was the problem.
 
I didn't install alsa-lib with the Makefile, but copied directly the required libraries. The configuration files in /usr/share/alsa were missing.

When you installed alsa-lib, did it copy its configuration files
to /usr/share/alsa?
