He already tried your very first step and failed.  Can you actually confirm that

yum install 389-ds -y

works on CentOS 6?  Without having to set up EPEL6?

Thanks!  I must say the installation instructions are very confusing.  Is there a reason the install links to the redhat doc vs. this?

That's where I started.  The first paragraph links to the install guide at redhat.  So that's where I went and ended up confused.
