it didn't get updated properly, but such is Linux some times.

I'm not sure what happened. Does
alternatives --config java_sdk
do anything?
ls -l /etc/alternatives/java_sdk

Yes, although I'm not sure why alternatives --config shows java
1.6.0
Try
alternatives --config jre
also
If that still doesn't work, try doing
alternatives --config java and --config jre
to change it to the gcj one, then change it back to the correct
java 1.6.0
problem

if you run 389-console -D 9 without the -f console.log
arguments, does
it output debug information to the terminal window?

java -version
alternatives --config java
java -version shows:
java version "1.6.0_20"
OpenJDK Runtime Environment (IcedTea6 1.9.8)

update-alternatives shows:
update-alternatives --config java
There are 2 programs which provide 'java'.

*+ 2 /usr/lib/jvm/jre-1.6.0-openjdk.x86_64/bin/java

So it is already configured to use 1.6.0, and 389-console still
blows up
as above. Ideas?
389-console -D 9 -f console.log - edit console.log to remove any
