Ah.  That is the source of the confusion.  /etc/dirsrv/schema stores the 
default schema to use for new instances.  If you already have an 
instance (/etc/dirsrv/slapd-something) you should put the schema you 
want to use in /etc/dirsrv/slapd-something/schema, then restart the server.
