After typing the following message on my debian system, it works.

apt-get --reinstall install xfonts-base

Do you have the "fixed" font?

For Xorg this is found in the Xorg misc-misc package. Look at the source 
downloads at  http://xorg.freedesktop.org/releases/individual/font/

Or if you did have XFree86 installed then adjust your FontPath (in your 
xorg.conf) to point to your XFree86 fonts.
