You should view your error log (usually some lines are printed on the screen after XFree exits, in any case the exit message points you to the location of the error log); did you configure your monitor & graphics/video card? It seems likely that there is no configuration for these items in the correspondig file (I would think it is "/etc/X11/XF86Config-4").
