Run "gtf 1024 768 60" to get a 1024x768 @ 60 Hz modeline (or some other modeline corresponding to the panel's native resolution): # 1024x768 @ 60.00 Hz (GTF) hsync: 47.70 kHz; pclk: 64.11 MHz Modeline "1024x768_60.00" 64.11 1024 1080 1184 1344 768 769 772 795 -HSync +Vsync Turn this into a 720x480 (or some other sub-1024x768 resolution) modeline by changing the hdisplay (1024) and the vdisplay (768) to 720 and 480 respectively (hdisplay must be a multiple of 8): # 720x480 @ 60 Hz hsync: 47.70 kHz; pclk: 64.11 MHz Modeline "720x480" 64.11 1024 1080 1184 1344 768 769 772 795 -HSync +Vsync Place this mode in the Section "Monitor" of the XF86Config file and, in the Section "Screen", use the "720x480" mode on the "Modes" line instead of the 1024x768 mode. This should produce a mode that has a 720x480 active region in the upper left corner of your 1024x768 monitor. Run xvidtune to interactively center the region. Take the new modeline numbers that xvidtune helped you tweak and update your XF86Config's 720x480 modeline so that the mode comes up centered when you start the server. Mark.
