I believe you want to be using the i810 driver rather than the i740 driver. It may also be that your i845G isn't well supported by the driver back in XFree86 4.3.0 (your version) - it's hard to keep track of what supported what. Give it a try though; it might work fine in 4.3.0. Mark.
