XServer Crash

Dear All,

I am using Red Hat Linux 9.0 with glib 3.3 and kernel 2.4.20-8 versions. The XServer crashed when I tried to read the contents of the /dev/mem file and /proc/kmem file using the cat command inorder to retrieve the contents of the physical memory.

As suggested in the kernel dump, here I am attaching the XFree86.0.log file.

What is wrong with the /dev/mem and /proc/kmem files and how they are related to XServer crash? Am I missing any configuration file variable?

Please provide a pointer to the solution or any link to study.

The same situation is repeating in every Linux box whenever I am performing some operations on /dev/mem and /proc/kmem files.

Regards.
