It should have been sufficient to `make install` under
xc/programs/Xserver/hw/xfree86/drivers/i740.
rebuild with gcc-3.3 ok.
could be problem of gcc-4.

w/ or w/o the patch both ok.
This doesn't sound good. You're certain you restarted the server between
`make install`'s?
