One way to have a basic configuration made automatically is to run 'X -configure'. XFree86 will then write a basic configuration to disk and tell you how to start using that configuration. When you like it, copy it to /etc/X11/XF86Config. You could also try another depth that might work, like 16, if you know how to edit that into your configuration.
