xlogin & linux-PAM

I'm not sure that this is really the right place to ask this question, but if it isn't maybe someone can direct me.

I have a Mandrake distibution which comes with: XFree86-4.3-29mdk.rpm This rpm includes xdm.

As supplied, xdm does not use PAM, or at least it does not use the configuration file: /etc/pam.d/xdm. And I cannot see what other configuration file it does use.

Does anyone there know about this stuff ? Is this behaviour standard, or is it some sort of Mandrake-specifc thing ?

Does anyone know how the xdm login (via xlogin "widget" ?) is configured ? I would like to tinker with the login as can be done via PAM.

regards, Tim Johnston
