IBM Thinkpad/Trident problem

Hi,
This is an issue that has probably already come up some time in the past. I have an old Thinkpad 760EL with Trident video chipset. After some finagling, I came up with a
XF86Config file that worked great with XFree 4.3.x (don't remember offhand what .x is, the machine is at home and I'm at work). Had to reinstall OS (RH Linux 7.3), and downloaded newest XFree release (4.4.0, I think--whatever was newest a few days ago). Now the same XF86Config file causes rejection of mode lines for resolution 800x600 that were accepted by the previous release (generic overscan/clock/sync complaint). Net result is no acceptable modes are found, and X bails. I suppose I could back down to the previous working release, but I'd rather find a fix for the newest/best release. Can anybody suggest likely changes made (probably in the Trident driver tree) between the two releases and/or suggest a source-code fix that might help? (Even a diff between the two Trident trees would be a big help.)
Thanks...
Eric Henry
