Title: Fedora 3 -new installation GL issues

New to linux, but just installed FC3 on a P3-450, 256mb ram, 40gig HD, Radeon7000pci card.

The installation went great.  Desktop looks great, works fine.
The problem is that all the GL screensavers like GL-gears, etc are extremely slow.
Tux racer runs great, so there must be some form of gl being used for rendering.
When I run glxinfo it says

Direct rendering: yes
Server GLX vendor string: SGI
Server GLX version string: 1.2
<snip>
Client GLX vendor string: SGI
Client GLX version string: 1.4
<snip>
OpenGL vendor string:  Tungsten Graphics, inc.
OpenGL renderer string:  Mesa DRI Radeon 20030328 X86/MM no-TCL
OpenGL version string: 1.2 Mesa 6.1
<snip>
Glu version: 1.3
<snip>

This is a default installation. Nothing has been added or changed in any way.

Ive heard so many things about Mesa, XF86free, X.org, Xwindows, etc that Im
Not sure how to fix this.

ATI doesn't have a driver unless you have a radeon8500 or better card.  And
The DRI directions read like stereo. Im not sure I could download all the trees,
Source codes, files, etc.  And then follow the instructions to completely rebuild
The code.

There's got to be an easier way to get good quality GL applications to work
On these linux systems.

How can I get good quality GL applications and games to work?
Whats the best way to do this?

Thank you in advance for your help!
Jesse
