It seems that your font server is not running.
To verify it, as superuser try the command:
service xfs status
The output should be something like:
xfs (pid 2173) is running...
where the number 2173 will be probably different.
If the output is different, try:
service xfs start chkconfig --level 35 xfs on
The first command will start the font server (xfs). The second will configure your system to start xfs automatically.
