quoth Keith Sabine:

| Yes, I've already got the "CalcAlgorithm" set to
| "CheckDesktopGeometry". According to the log file, it sees the LCD as
| a 1400x1050 but can't find a mode
| for that resolution - and indeed there is not one listed in the log;
| the highest mode
| is 1280x1024, 24 bit, which is what it defaults to.
|
| I guess the question is how do the known modes get calculated - and
| is it possible
| to add a new mode?

sure. look in your logfile and see if you find something like this (i'm
drawing from my own 1920x1200 monitor here, and radeon card, so your
mileage will certainly vary):

(II) RADEON(0): Supported additional Video Mode:
(II) RADEON(0): clock: 154.0 MHz   Image Size:  495 x 309 mm
(II) RADEON(0): h_active: 1920  h_sync: 1984  h_sync_end 2016
h_blank_end 2120 h_border: 0
(II) RADEON(0): v_active: 1200  v_sync: 1203  v_sync_end 1206
v_blanking: 1212 v_border: 0

now. if you do, you'll see numbers that can be made into a modeline;
from the above one might make

"1920x1200" 154.0 1920 1984 1026 2120 1200 1203 1206 1212

this does not, though, guarantee success. that modeline doesn't work for
me. so, experimenting absent any useful advice, i looked further in the
logfile and found this:
(II) RADEON(0): Ranges: V min: 55  V max: 65 Hz, H min: 30  H max: 92
kHz, PixClock max 170 MHz

so i substituted 170 for 154.0 in the modeline, and voila! it works
perfectly. if it hadn't, i would have played around with that value,
either going down from 170 or up from 154, until i found the highest
value that worked.

obviously, having an editor you know how to use in a pure console is
important for this kind of experimentation. the one in midnight
commander is pretty good for this.

bear in mind, i haven't the faintest idea what i'm doing here -- i'd
just been trying to get the thing configured for more than a week and
was at the point of trying anything. (the cat is glad that this worked;
feline sacrifice was next on the list. cat is still in danger, until i
can get my kensington expert mouse trackball configured the way i
want.)

Liberalism has been degraded into liberality. Men have tried to turn
"revolutionise" from a transitive to an intransitive verb.
