While installing RH7.3 (yes, I know, it is old, but i need to run an application; each newer linux version has its own bug when running it, so, RH7.3 is still OK) I made the mistake of not testing when I changed 16 bit color to true color -- I forgot I had not installed the NVIDIA card, but still had the unrecognized and problematic ~SIS300 card installed.
Also, the monitor i am using (SGI -- Sony -- GDM17E21 was not on the RH7.3 list so I went with the default the install-GUI chose (SGIX1000), but input the HSync and VSync values for the GDM12E21...
Other than problems with the above defaults, I don't know why, when
switching into graphics mode from text mode, the error "no screens found"
popped up.
(PS I am noting this for no good reason except that it might reflect same
problem: I (also) couldn't see the Grub Loader on startup. I dunno if
that is a prob with Grub, or with the no screens issue, tho...cuz another
OS shoulda loaded...but it didn't...as I said, am noting this as the Grub
loader is somewhat graphical :P )
If anyone can help, I have attached the XFree86.log (for those who dislike
attachments, there is a copy of it at ftp.evl.uic.edu/pub/INcoming/ABOUT),
but below is a snippet of the log (XFree version 4.2.0):

If it is a question of changing the XF86Config file, yea!!!! [I looked at the XF86Config file but don't see where I should/can change the screen values; the XFree86.org documenation on version 2.4.0 mentions newer sis card changes, but...]
any help would be appreciated
Either set
DefaultFbBpp 32
in the screen section (below the DefaultDepth 24 statement), or use the "sis" driver, for which the current version is available on my website (yes, even for 4.2.0).
