Both are helpful. I have the digital card for my g400MAX though chose to use the MultiLink to simplify things and perhaps better support for the monitor. The latter is probably true no sure about the earlier!
It appears the 1600SW has become a bit of a hybrid due to the MultiLink. The g400 owners manual I found at SGI actually mentions the MultiLink and gives the VESA modes it supports, which helps a lot. I still have to info to fill in regarding some of the other settings X needs as I do not wish to damage the monitor.
