I've never done this.  What I have done is replaced the X server binary
(/usr/X11R6/bin/X) and the modules in /usr/X11R6/lib/modules.  This
worked without a problem.

I would recommend backing up your entire /usr/X11R6 directory and
/etc/X11 directory before trying any similar procedure.
