"no screens" with i810

1. The video card is an onboard Intel I82865G
2. X works *perfectly* with Knoppix! which used i810
... 
Indeed, I tried copying the Config-4 from the Knoppix
/etc to the /etc on the hard drive.
It again would not boot up X. Just blank screen, then
character login. (This works fine.)
3. I am travelling away from my home machines (hence
knoppix) but trying to install an old Redhat 7.2 on a
budget machine.
