There were no errors in the log file so I assume that means there's nothing wrong with the server. It sounds more like a problem with the window manager. Can you run XFree86 by itself? Ie. just run "XFree86". <Ctrl><Alt><Backspace> will quit it. If you can do that, then the server itself is running fine. Mark.
