Trying to get a second video card working (Radeon / Matrox)

This is becoming the worlds biggest PITA for me...  I am going to give it a 
few days and then send the card back.

Anyway,

I have a Radeon 9000 AGP installed and working in a "Big Screen" configuration 
across two monitors.  

I want to connect a third monitor - so I got a PCI MATROX G450 (dual head).  

I am running the Radeon ATI drivers and from what I read, Xinerama just does 
not work with them, so I have resigned myself to running another session on 
the 3rd monitor. 

However, when I have the Matrox card installed in the machine and I start up - 
it shows up as PCI:3:0:0 okay, but Xfree freezes shortly into the boot - the 
screens go blank and I have to reboot.  There is nothing *obvious* (read as 
"anything I can understand in the log").  There are a bunch of drmOpenDevice 
errors that I do not think were there before.

The log file is attached, but I guess my question comes down to:

* Is this problem solveable?

* Is going to the Xfree Radeon drivers a better idea? (I am okay if that 
sacrifices some FPS).  My priority is on Xinerama over 3 monitors, and it 
working...  its not my game machine.

* Would a different second card work better?

I have the latest ATI Radeon drivers and the binary Matrox drivers (although I 
dont think its even getting that far).  The whole show is being run on Gentoo 
with a 2.6.7 kernel.
