Is your partition clean ?
(Once my host rebooted when I tried to edit /etc/fstab because my reiserfs partition wasn't clean)
I'm guessing that for some reason there is a directory in /var/log called XFree86.0.log and than when you cd to /var/log and do an "ls -al XFree86.0.log" you get returned something like:
total 4 drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 48 2004-08-19 09:20 . drwxrwxrwt 58 root root 4288 2004-08-19 09:20 ..
Is this the case? If so, rm the directory and then try your startx.
