I'm guessing that for some reason there is a directory in /var/log called XFree86.0.log and than when you cd to /var/log and do an "ls -al XFree86.0.log" you get returned something like:


total 4
drwxr-xr-x    2 root     root           48 2004-08-19 09:20 .
drwxrwxrwt   58 root     root         4288 2004-08-19 09:20 ..

Is this the case?  If so, rm the directory and then try your startx.
