Anything relevant? Check the console for kernel errors too (although they should be in dmesg anyway). Go single user, unmount /var and fsck it. Are you running any "unusual" kernel features like grsec that modify expected behaviour a lot? I've only ever had IO errors when running NFS or when the HD itself was going bad.
