I was trying (not successfully, I have to say) to install XFree86 4.4 yesterday and saw that the ATI Radeon 9800 Pro driver was listed as a supported driver (R350).  I have a an ATI Radeon 9600SE card myself.

So, if you have more luck than I've had so far, you might try installing the 4.4 release of XFree86.
