You'll want to read this first
ftp://ftp.xfree86.org/pub/XFree86/4.4.0/binaries/Common/Install

Then you'll need to download this and run it.
ftp://ftp.xfree86.org/pub/XFree86/4.4.0/binaries/Common/Xinstall.sh

The above will tell you which binary packages to download from here.
ftp://ftp.xfree86.org/pub/XFree86/4.4.0/binaries/

Your other option is to go here and read this
http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian/README.html

You can get only to 4.3 from Debian and that's in Sid. Staying within
the confines of your distribution will be easier than downloading the
files from XFree86 directly. The choice is up to you. (Take the red
pill.) :)

P.S. You may want to save your config files for XFree86 and you window
manager. Also the startx script is sometimes modified and by downloading
the files directly from Xfree86 you may lose distro specific changes to
this file.

Any chance that's doable via debian packages? (I completely failed last
time I tried to build from source...still kindof green, I am.)
