I can't help you with the build issues, but I have used debian and had XFree86 (v.4.2.1) working there so if you want to go the .deb package route I'm willing to help. In that case I will need to see the /var/log/XFree86.0.log file. It may also be helpful for you to send the config file that you used. -----Original Message----- From: xfree86-admin@xxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:xfree86-admin@xxxxxxxxxxx] On Behalf Of Beau Sent: Monday, May 10, 2004 12:33 PM To: xfree86@xxxxxxxxxxx Subject: newbie fails with .deb, binaries and source Greetings, The subject line pretty much says it all. I have a compaq presario 2105; I used the lord sutch mini-image to make a debian install disc, then installed using dselect. I used dselect to install X, but couldn't actually get it running. I went to the XFree86.org site and installed from binaries, and spent most of the weekend trying various tweaks to the XFree86 config file created alternately by XFree86, xf86config and xf86cfg; all to no avail. Finally I tried building from source last night, but this was completely over my head. The build choked when it couldn't find a file ("pam_application" I think it was) and I really didn't know enough about what I was doing to know how to correct and procede. I hope this shows enough effort on my part that some kind soul will show pity on me and help me get this running. I used to have an RH9 install, X worked fine from the install disc. I want to get my head around Debian. I know this isn't a debian list, but I don't really think it's a debian issue, I think it's an, "I don't really grok X" issue. All help appreciated. -- beau (c)2004ISR; http://www.semanticrestructuring.com Choose One: ( )Democracy ( )Paperless Voting http://www.verfiedvoting.com _______________________________________________ XFree86 mailing list XFree86@xxxxxxxxxxx http://XFree86.Org/mailman/listinfo/xfree86 _______________________________________________ XFree86 mailing list XFree86@xxxxxxxxxxx http://XFree86.Org/mailman/listinfo/xfree86
